Important Work-Life Descriptions- What’s In a Job?

What Does That Job Title Actually Mean?

All work is important and I am here to showcase that. Talk Jobs to Me reveals what people do all day at work and how they contribute to society. Come along as I interview anyone with a job and recount their stories in my new blog.

Use this as a guide to help decide if a job is right for you, to learn what your friends or family do all day, or to be informed and knowledgeable about the work that makes our world go ’round.

There is so much beneath the surface of a job title, and I’m going to get the details!

Talk Jobs to Me

You know how we all ask each other, “What do you do for a living?”… It’s a classic ice-breaker, and, indeed, it does the job, but only on a surface level.

We don’t always know what that job title means, and it leaves many of us making assumptions, creating a story about what they are actually doing. Or, more often than that, we just remain clueless.

What does their day look like? Are they sitting at a desk or running around town? Working with their hands or attending meetings? What do their hours and lifestyles look like? I have so many questions!

I have always been fascinated by what people do to make a living. Especially since I once lived in a house whose patio looked directly at a four million dollar home. I would often wonder, what on earth have they done to earn that kind of money?!

Every part of me wanted to knock on their door to ask them. I never did get the courage but, the fascination remained.

Career Matchmaker

Growing up, I paid close attention to the people around me, the jobs they held, and the lifestyles they were maintaining. As a result, I have often played career matchmaker for friends and family members looking for their next move.

And I’m the queen of pep talks for interviews, full of advice and bossy instructions. I knew I was on to something because they always got the job. Talk about rewarding!

I have had many jobs myself, and I plan on sharing all of those experiences here with you, too. My ultimate goal is to educate, inspire and empower you to enter into a new job with realistic expectations of what you might expect.

Work is Important, and we Need Jobs

One day while driving to work, it dawned on me that someone, just a regular ol’ person like you or me, is the owner of each and every store we drive by.

I have always worked for small, family-owned businesses yet, until that point, I had never stopped to think that even mainstream stores, like Chick-fil-a and Public Storage, for example, had someone at the very top running the show.

At the time, I worked as a sales designer for a flooring and remolding company. My customers included owners of places like restaurants, storage facilities, funeral homes, home builders, insurance brokerages, car dealerships, boutiques, and so many more. I could go on, but you get the point.

And, as we know, it takes a team to run successful, functional companies, which brings me to my next point.

Job’s are the lifeblood of our communities and provide us with our lifestyle as we know it. Every single tangible thing around you required countless people to conceptualize and create.

There are jobs out there that most of us have never heard of!

I want to learn about them all and share them here with you.
